Youth Advisory Commission
The New Brunswick Arts Board seeks nominations for practicing professional artists between the ages of 18 and 35 to participate in a Youth Commission on the Arts that will act in an advisory capacity to the NBAB on issues facing younger artists in the province.
The decision to establish a Youth Commission grew from a series of events such as the États généraux des arts et de la culture dans la société acadienne au Nouveau-Brunswick, the Canada Council’s Next Generation Dialogues as well as the NBAB’s own series of provincial roundtables that highlighted the desire for younger artists to have more of a voice in the artistic community about issues concerning their artistic practices.
On June 4th, members of the NBAB met with Jake Powning, an Anglophone sword smith, Mélanie Léger, a Francophone theatre practitioner, and Raymond Sewell, an Aboriginal musician, to discuss the establishment of such a commission. All those present agreed that the up-and-coming generations of artists work in a much faster and more multidisciplinary world than ever before and establishing a Youth Commission would help give these artists a voice while also counseling the NBAB about what is needed to move the arts in New Brunswick towards a more dynamic future.
The role of the commission would include advising the board on youth issues, defending young artists, acting as ambassadors and resource people for younger artists, serving as a link between emerging and more established artists and board members, looking at issues facing younger artists: i.e. lack of curators in the province, museum space, getting younger artists on juries and committees etc.
The Youth Commission would comprise a maximum of 8 members of young professional artists, aged 18 to 35, who have an established art practice. Within these members, there would representation of linguistic diversity, rural/urban diversity, cultural diversity, disciplinary diversity, gender diversity, age diversity and regional diversity.
Those interested in participating are asked to submit a nomination form, an updated CV as well as a letter of intent outlining their reasons for wanting to be a on the Youth Commission as well as what their involvement currently is in the artistic community and their community at large.
