How to Present an Effective Application
Before you begin
- Get complete information: Call the New Brunswick Arts Board's program officers
to confirm deadlines, eligibility and to make sure that you are applying to the appropriate program. Program officers do not make decisions about who receives funds, they are available to assist all applicants. For advice or questions about the application process, please call well before the competition deadline.
- Read the Program Description and application form and follow them carefully.
- Prepare early. Program officers may not be able to help you if you wait until the last minute.
- Prepare your application for review by a multidisciplinary jury. Make your project understandable for artists representing other disciplines than your own. The role of the Program Officer is to help applicants and facilitate the jury process.
The application form
- If you're not taking advantage of the online forms, please type or print clearly in black ink to facilitate reproduction. (Jurors will receive a second or third generation photocopy of your application.)
- Your project description should be clear and concise. This is your opportunity to communicate your project to the multidisciplinary jury. (Exceeding the 250 word limits may put your request to a disadvantage, since only 250 words will be translated.)
- Budget: make sure all your expenses are eligible according to the program criteria and use accurate figures, otherwise you may not be admissible for the amount you are asking for or this could undermine the success of your project.
- Carefully select your samples of work. As much as possible your samples of work should relate to the project for which you are applying. This is your opportunity to show the multidisciplinary jury's your artistic merit and your ability to carry out your proposed project. Do not send original works or master copies, send first generation duplicates such as slides, cassettes, CD's or videos.
- Reviews, art critiques and news clippings: do not send originals, send clean 8 ½ x 11 copies. Do NOT highlight, when photocopied highlighted text turns all gray. Underline or use arrows instead.
- Make sure to submit all the required support material and sample of work with your application. Only those applications which are completed in the prescribed time frame will be presented to the jury.
- Do not assume the jury is already familiar with your work. Jurors make their assessment based on the information provided in the application, and not what they may know about an applicant through their prior experience or knowledge.
- Make sure you respect the deadline! Your application must be postmarked or received by the New Brunswick Arts Board on or before the deadline specified in the appropriate program guidelines.
